The Small But Smart competition encouraged new and innovative solutions for prototypical designs of medium density housing, for lots readily available throughout Los Angeles. Montalbano Architects created a housing type that provides maximum variation in layout, while retaining a small square footage and low construction cost. Because of the great diversity of the Los Angeles area, the design needed to reflect many different family compositions, from a two person family to an extended family, or in-law units within a home. The result is a simple floor plan that can become any of these without modification to anything except nonstructural walls.
